Why?
Road Accident statistics
For the majority of people, the most dangerous thing they do while at work is drive on the public highway. If you or your staff drives over 25.000 miles per year then they are doing the 3rd riskiest job in the country behind deep sea fisherman and miners.
- 2,538 PEOPLE KILLED - 49 PER WEEK
- 26,034 SERIOUSLY INJURED - 500 PER WEEK
- 202,333 INJURED - 3880 PER WEEK
ABOUT 30% OF THESE PEOPLE WERE AT WORK AT THE TIME!!
Motoring offences
- 4,857,131 - Not including parking fines
- 1,959,484 - Speeding offences alone that is 37,682 every day

ARE YOU SURE NONE OF THESE PEOPLE ARE DRIVING FOR YOU?
The Law
The Health & Safety at Work Act extends to the use of vehicles in the workplace. If you are an employer, you have duties under Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations and related legislation.
You need to:-- Assess the risk and reduce it to the lowest reasonably practicable level.
- Train your drivers in the use of the vehicle and other equipment.
- Ensure that vehicles provided are safe, suitable and properly maintained
The Costs
The 2007 cost of a fatal accident was estimated to be £1.8m; a serious accident was put at £215,000 and a slight one at £22,230. A minor damage accident was said to cost £1,970 on average. Apart from the obvious monetary and human cost listed below are a few of the hidden costs you may not have considered.
The Hidden Costs
- Increased insurance premiums and excess
- Potential loss of key personnel
- Staff downtime for medical appointments/attendance at court etc.
- Replacement staff costs and sick pay
- Loss of production or production delays
- Potential third party claims
- Repairs to damaged vehicles
- Car or van hire for repair duration
- Re-delivery
- Loss of company reputation and contracts
- Fines and costs of prosecution, including legal fees
- Investigation and administrative time.
These are the costs in monetary terms but what about the human and social costs. Going back to the accident statistics 588 families are adversely affected every week. You will have lost the services of key personnel but families will have lost much more.
Most companies are looking to improve their corporate social responsibilities (CSR's). Indeed many larger companies and local authorities demand that you explain what you're CSR policies are when you respond to contract opportunities. Driver training can help towards this as well. It will save you fuel, reduce emissions and show you are serious about improving the environment.
Driver training covers a range of products and if done properly will save you money and improve the skill and knowledge of your drivers. It will also help you towards your "Duty of Care" responsibilities under Health & Safety legislation such as the "New Corporate Manslaughter Act" now in force.
